Temple's history as a settlement can be traced back to the Roman occupation of Southern Scotland and was the Scottish base for The Knights Templar between the 12th century and their suppression in the 14th. Another significant group Temple became home to in the 1870's were Irish navvies who were lodged here due to its proximity to the site of the Gladhouse reservoir works. It is thought that during their time here there was drunkenness and violence between groups of these navvies which resulted in the village acquiring a new police station and two full time policemen to combat the problem.
