Baalbek is an ancient Phoenician city in Lebanon, dating from 9000 BC. During Roman times it was known as Heliopolis, and to this day contains some of Lebanon's best preserved Roman architecture. The temple of Jupiter was remarkable for its 20 metre high columns and the gigantic stones of its terrace.
