Prestonfield House was built in 1687 by the architect William Bruce, for Sir James Dick, Lord Provost of Edinburgh (1679-1681), to replace the early 16th century Priestfield House which was burned down by students in anti-Catholic riots in 1681. The site had previously been a Cistercian monastery founded in 1150. Prestonfield House was owned by the Dick family from the 17th century to the 20th century. In the 1960s the estate was converted and is now a 5 star hotel and restaurant. Some of the 17th century interior decoration still exists.
