Spylaw House was built in 1773 as the home of snuff manufacturer and philanthropist, James Gillespie. Remains of the snuff-mill, powered by the Water of Leith, are incorporated into the rear of the building. The snuff was sold from a shop run by Gillespie's brother in Edinburgh's High Street.
