A bronze statue of a man draped in fabric, taming a rearing horse stands on a stone plinth in the middle of a courtyard. The plinth reads "Presented to the City By the Subscribers, 1884".

This bronze statue was made by John Steel. He opened one of the first foundries dedicated to sculpture in Edinburgh and in 1838 was appointed sculptor to The Queen. His sculpture of Alexander and Bucephalus was cast in 1832-33.
