Cassie, her husband David Watt, and son David R. Watt moved to 51 Durham Road, Portobello in 1933. The Watt's new home had the advantage of a large garden, which the elder David built up from scratch. He obtained used bricks from a nearby demolition site and laid a system of pathways through the garden. David also built a sundial for the front garden, and on the longest day of the year in June, he sat marking the shadows every half hour in wet cement.
