Born in India, Mary Rose Scotland (b. 1929) was the first born child of George and Annie "Nannie" Rose Scotland (nee Ritchie).
Mary Rose's father, George Scotland, was the manager of a coffee plantation in Coorg/Nilgiri Hills in South India. After their marriage and move to India, George and Nannie, both Scottish, had three daughters: Mary Rose (b. 1929), Elizabeth Ritchie (b. 1931) and Anne, who was born just before the outbreak of WWII.
After India gained its independence, the family returned to Scotland.
