Mary Webster, the artist, was born in 1794 to John Webster, Minister of the Parish Church at Inverarity. The family lived in Inverarity, a village seven miles north of Dundee until her father died in 1807 and they moved to live with Mary's mother's family in Carmyllie.
Carmyllie is a rural parish in Angus. It is situated on high ground between Arbroath, on the coast, and the inland county town of Forfar. The main settlements in the parish are Redford, Greystone, Guynd and Milton of Carmyllie.
At times the signature of an artist on a painting or print can sometimes be followed by the term Pinx, P, Pinxit or Pictor. These terms are from the Latin, Pinxit which means painted and simply indicates that the painting, or in the case of a print, the original item, was painted by the named person.
