Biography
Wilhelm Heinrich Ludwig Gruner, known as Lewis Gruner, was born in Dresden, Germany, in 1801. Gruner was a painter, engraver, lithographic designer and art expert. Although he was born and died (1882) in Germany, he had a massive influence in Britain. Lewis Gruner lived in Milan from 1826 to 1836 to study before living in Rome until he later moved to Britain in 1841. In 1846 he was commissioned to decorate the garden pavilion at Buckingham Palace and then became advisor to Prince Albert on Art and Design and acquisitions advisor for the Victoria and Albert Museum - then known as the South Kensington Museum. Lewis Gruner mentored the famous architect and designer Owen Jones before returning home to Dresden and assuming the post of Director of the Royal Museum of Prints and Drawings.
