The Duke of Edinburgh visited Edinburgh in August 1952 to open the Edinburgh International Festival.
Smoking was extremely popular in the 1950s and many of the guests would have smoked throughout the meal. However, there is a polite request at the bottom of the Toast List page asking invitees to refrain from smoking because of the fire risk to the valuable books within the Parliament Hall venue.
