Description
stars. We went inside the Cathedral or largest church. It's [Its] interior is most gorgeous, but most beautiful all the same. The walls are all hand painted with illustrations of biblical pictures, right up to the very top. The pillars are of wonderfully embossed gold, like wise the altar, which is entirely of gold. The Ikons are very fine, all set with precious stones. On the right of the altar is a huge gold & crystal casket containing a wax figure of Christ, which is only opened on Easter Sunday. To the left is a big wooden cross & Ikon, which was carved by Peter The Great. Beyond the altar is an inner chamber, the "Holy of Holies", where no woman is allowed to enter. After the Cathedral we went to see Peter The Great's house - a simple wooden building. After some more exploring in back streets etc: we went to the Governor's house where we partook of a very jolly tea! Lovely cakes & the first cup of "drinkable" tea I've had since leaving home - that's one for our old "Hunspill"["Hanspiel"]!
After tea we had a wander through the market & the port & then aboard the launch & back to
