neck & limped forward with his swollen, bleeding, bruised feet wrapped in filthy bits of rags. The confusion was beyond all imagination, the clamour deafening & oh such sad, sad sights everywhere, such heart-rending scenes.
The news is bad. Chernavoda has been occupied by Mackensen's troops, Constanza has fallen & the Russo- Rumanian forces are falling back rapidly beyond the line of the Northern Dobrudja. The capture of Chernavoda - at the Danube end of the trans-Dobrudja railway to Constanza, seals the fate alike of the railway & of the famous "Carol Bridge" & is the "object" which the enemy having been making for some days.
We passed through some beautiful country yesterday, very hilly & rugged, with deep gullies & high rocks & far away in the distance the wide-sweeping Danube. The sunset was most gorgeous, all the sky golden & the blue, rugged hills standing out clearly against the crimson & gold - why are we in the midst of war? The sheep & cattle - big silvery grey beasties - & the tinkle of their bells - added to the irony of it all. All through this "voyage", there really seems to be some
