This is a general holiday in Petrograd - "The Blessing of the Neva" Festival. The people come from far & near & bring receptacles
for holding water & get them filled with "blessed water" from the Neva. This festival is held once a year - the 19th Jan: - we had a most terrible business finding a corner to go to when we arrived here. The place is choke-a block [chock-a-block] with refugées [refugees]. We finally secured floor space in this Hotel, but just for the one night - we will be "homeless" again to-morrow - so must start the old game of hunting again - a cold game too! The cold here is intense, very severe frost & snow everywhere. I never knew there could be such awful cold anywhere! We expect to be here for a week or 10 days, as the permit question is the difficulty here & takes time. We interviewed numerous officials this morning, & both the Embassy & Consulate people are to do all they can to help us. Everyone is so kind. I'll finish this to-morrow, after we find a home!
21st We couldn't get in to any of the Hotels yesterday, not a hole or corner anywhere. In the end we went to the English padré - Mr. Lombard - & he has got us a room in "The British Nursing Home" here. This home is "run" by Mr. Lombard & the English Church & is for the benefit of the
