Description
valley of the Danube & the broad, beautiful river flowing peacefully on - undisturbed by war & rumours of war. Well, we trekked on & on & spent anything but arestful night; we were all so tired & we could get very little rest or sleep "huddled" in those joggly, bumping carts, cramped & cold & cross! & so hungry. But "needs must when the devil drives" - & the devils were driving, & double quick time too!
We were given six hours to get to the Frontier, so had no time to think of being hungry & tired & cold. Our drivers were so splendid, how they managed I know not. No one knew the way, it was pitch-dark, just inky blackness, & the horses absolutely "done" -poor beasties they did nobly & toiled on dead beat. We do feel grubby & "piggy" - we've not had a wash or our clothes off now for 10 days now! I wonder if will it be a case of 'em dropping off!?We reached Tsakcha & the pontoon bridge about mid-day to-day - farewell to Rumania & long live Russia!! We've "done it" & I don't think the Bulgars will get us now - they very nearly "nabbed" us
