Ferdinando Ongania [1842 - 1911] was an Italian antiquarian bookseller, with a shop in St. Mark's Square in Venice. From 1861 until his death in 1911 he devoted himself almost entirely to the printing of illustrated art books. His love of Venice inspired him to record the architecture of his beloved city.

The Giant's Staircase of the Ducal Palace in Venice was the official entrance to the Doge's Palace and was built between 1483 and 1491 and designed by Antonio Rizzo.
Its name derives from the two marble statues by Sansovino depicting Mars and Neptune, placed there in 1567 representing the power and dominion of Venice on the mainland (Mars) and the sea (Neptune).
