Ferdinando Ongania [1842 - 1911] was an Italian antiquarian bookseller, with a shop in St. Mark's Square in Venice. From 1861 until his death in 1911 he devoted himself almost entirely to the printing of illustrated art books. His love of Venice inspired him to record the architecture of his beloved city.
Although Venice is composed of islands and canals, the Grand Canal is the only really large one. It's shaped like a backwards letter S, and is approximately two miles long. At its widest point it is roughly 350 feet wide but the normal width is about half that. The Grand Canal was traditionally the high-rent district in Venice where houses were larger, and decoration was on a much grander scale. From the Grand Canal there was easier transport routes and access to shipping which attracted warehouses and merchant's residences.
