Ferdinando Ongania [1842 - 1911] was an Italian antiquarian bookseller, with a shop in St. Mark's Square in Venice. From 1861 until his death in 1911 he devoted himself almost entirely to the printing of illustrated art books. His love of Venice inspired him to record the architecture of his beloved city.
One of the most interesting (and photographed) sights in Venice is this small squero (boatyard), which first opened in the 17th century. Just north of the Zattere, the boatyard lies next to the Church of San Trovaso on the narrow Rio San Trovaso (not far from the Accademia Bridge). It is surrounded by Tyrolean-looking wooden structures (a rarity in this city of stone structures built on water) that are home to the multi-generational owners and original workshops for traditional Venetian boats.
