Description

This picture shows Broomielaw Bridge spanning the River Clyde in Glasgow. Horse & cart traffic sits on the road whilst people walk across on the small pavements to either side of the road. The mast of a small boat can be seen in the foreground whilst to the back the road leaving the bridge can be seen to continue on, with stone buildings lining the streets to either side of it.

This picture shows Broomielaw Bridge, which was built in 1836. Designed by Thomas Telford, the bridge replaced the existing bridge which stood in that position. The bridge was designed with seven arches supporting it but as time went on the ships that passed beneth the arches became too big to fit through properly and in 1899 this bridge was replaced by a new, wider bridge. By public demand, the new bridge retained many of Telford's features, including the stonework. It is now known as the Jamaica Street or Glasgow Bridge.
