James Valentine (1815 - 1879) was a famous photographer and publisher from Dundee, Scotland. His father, John Valentine built up a publishing and lithography business in 1825 which, after training in France, James Valentine expanded into a portrait studio in 1851, and in the 1860s went on to include landscape photography such as that found in this collection.

In 1868, he was commissioned by the queen to photograph 40 Highland scenes and was appointed as the Royal Photographer.
