This image has been chosen for the Edinburgh - Past and Present Exhibition by Rt Hon George Foulkes MSP - "The High Street area of the Old Town and its people are the essential Edinburgh for me, although much less so now than in the past. It was difficult to choose from a variety of evocative pictures of the closes and so this is the choice because it is typical of both people and that town and is striking picture in itself." George Foulkes.

Gladstone's Land is located in the Lawnmarket area of Edinburgh. It is a six-storey, 17th century merchant house in a traditional arcaded stone tenement building. It was built in 1631 by Thomas Gladstone.

Lawnmarket is the section of Edinburgh's Royal Mile running from its junction with Johnston Terrace to where it meets George IV Bridge. Regular markets were held in this area until the late 18th century.

The word cobble has been used here to help with searching, an alternative term is sett. Sett stones describe both the type of stone and the method in which they are used.
