The Miners' Gala, 1985
Description
Miners and other trade Union supporters, carrying banners and placards, parade down the Canongate towards Holyrood Park as part of the 1985 Miners' Gala. The parade goes up the hill as far as the eye can see. Spectators stand on the pavement and on the steps of the Canongate Tolbooth.

This was the first Gala to be held after the strike finished. The members of the National Union of Mineworkers went on strike in 1984-5 against the government's programme of pit closures. The strike lasted nearly a year, and during this time there was a great deal of support to raise money and provide food for the miners and their families.
