side, gold silk corded fringe and corded rope and tassel. Central design of the Edinburgh Coat of Arms, above in gold lettering, SUCCESS TO THE NINE HOURS
MOVEMENT. Below in gold lettering Let us shorten the hours of Labour for that is the
Working Man's True Interest.

This banner was made for the campaign to reduce the working day from ten to nine hours, hours achieved by the stonemasons in 1861. The Associated Carpenters and Joiners of Scotland, Edinburgh Branch, carried it in the
Demonstration of Nov. 17 1866 and in the Great
Demonstration against the Criminal Law Amendment Act of August 23 1873. It has been cut across completely under the top lettering and stitched together, maybe because of a change in the name of the branch.
