Patrick Sarsfield was a senior and most effective Jacobite commander opposing the forces of William of Orange in Ireland. Following the decisive battle of Aughrim, and the subsequent treaty of Limerick in 1691, Sarsfield joined the 'Wild Geese' seeking military service in the armies of Catholic Europe. He was killed in Flanders while fighting under French colours at the Battle of Landen.
