Until the growth in the herring industry, Newhaven fishermen fished for white fish. They fished mainly by line, using mussels as bait. Later, drift netting took over but this was replaced by ringnetting, which was introduced into the Firth of Forth in 1884.
This is a photograph of 'Jacinth' in Newhaven Harbour, taken in the 1950s. At this time she fished mainly for lobsters and crabs, sailing as far as Inchkeith. In the winter, she would be tied up, the crew joining the bigger 'ringnetters' and fishing for herring and sprats.
The village of Newhaven grew from the site chosen by King James lV to build his greatest ship, the Michael. In the 19C it became one of the main landing ports for fishermen from all over the East Coast of Scotland. While still home to a busy fish market, only one registered fishing boat uses the harbour today, the rest being leisure craft.
