Newhaven fishmarket was opened by Leith Docks Commission in 1896. It brought much needed prosperity to the village, which had by this time lost trade to other ports. Soon fish was being landed here from harbours such as Eyemouth and from as far north as Wick and Peterhead.
This is a group photograph of fishmarket staff, taken outside Newhaven fishmarket in the 1930s. Today the market occupies one third of the original building.
