John Liston was a fisherman, as was Ann Marshall's father John. The minister signing the document is Rev Dr James Fairbairn, the much-loved minister of St Andrew's Church, which was know as the fishermen's church.
Newhaven, like all fishing communities, was closely knit, and intermarriage was common. The result was that the village was represented by only a few surnames. These appear in the records of the Free Fishermen's Society. The name Liston appears in some of the earliest records.
