Colinton Mains, recorded in 1654 as Newmains of Colingtoune, was possibly created as the new home farm of Colinton at that time. By 1813 it was a farm of 112 acres and lay between the Braid Burn and Wester Craiglockhart with the steading on the east side of Oxgangs Road.
The south east corner of the farm was developed in 1937 and the first street, Colinton Mains Drive, was built. Other streets were built in this field alongside those in a neighbouring Oxgangs field, forming the area of Colinton Mains that we know today.
