Outdoors, back green, or garden was still the most popular place to play in the 1950's. Fewer children had their own bedroom to play in, or as many toys to play with, while the streets had far less traffic than today. Children met their friends and made up their own games or followed the latest craze. Roller skates were a very popular toy in the 1950's and are still very much used today.
These roller skates belonged to Doreen Crawford, who grew up in Dalkeith, Scotland. Doreen was born in 1946, and like many of her peers would have used these skates to play in the streets around her home.
