The Wombles are a group of fictional furry mouse like creatures, which live in burrows on Wimbledon Common in London. They spend their time eating and collecting rubbish, which they recycle and use in lots of ingenious ways. The Wombles were created by author Elisabeth Beresford, originally appearing in a series of children's novels from 1968. The books were made in to a television programme in the mid 1970s. The message of green living and caring for your environment was part of the ecology movement of the 1970's.
