Title
The Mound with the Castle in the background (1953)
Description
A view from the bottom of Hanover Street in Edinburgh at the junction with Princes Street. The street is busy with cars and there are many people crossing the road and walking past the canopied shops. Overhead tramlines create a grid pattern against the sky and a corner of the grand entrance to the Royal Scottish Academy is silhouetted against a misty skyline of Edinburgh Castle.

Princes Street is one of the main thoroughfares and shopping areas in Edinburgh. It was created as part of James Craig's New Town development and named in honour of George III's sons. With the exception of St John's Church there is no building on the southern side of Princes Street, allowing spectacular views of Edinburgh Castle and Old Town.
