Description

The pupils of Edinburgh Ladies College, Queen Street, Edinburgh, concentrate over their work in the Science room. They are working in pairs using gas-lit Bunsen burners. The girls are wearing a variety of dresses and gymslips. Tall windows light two sides of the room which is filled with wooden furniture including cabinets and tables. A number of glass lampshades hang from the ceiling.

Queen Street was the home of Edinburgh's Ladies College from 1871-1966.This was just one of a series of moves and name changes for the institution that started life in 1694 as the Maiden Hospital in the Cowgate. In 1944, the college's name changed again to Mary Erskine's reflecting the name of the original creator of the Maiden Hospital.
