In the 1950s, one of the ways of preventing the spread of tuberculosis (TB) was to diagnose the disease early. Everyone was encouraged to have an X-ray examination of their lungs. If someone was found to be carrying TB, they could be quickly treated before they passed the infection onto anyone else.
