Description

The portrait of a boy is mounted on a page. The boy has short fair hair combed into a side parting. He wears a blazer. The oval portrait is framed by a rectangular border. Above the border the page is titled 'Home for Destitute and Homeless Boys' in stencilled lettering with flourishes. Below the portrait a biblical motto is printed in gothic script.

Accompanying text from Edinburgh Industrial Brigade and Home for the Rescue of Destitute & Homeless Boys: "I have neither Father nor Mother... When I was left an orphan I was miserably wretched... I thought I might do something for myself if I got work down the Coal Pits... However I soon found this was an utter failure... I got ill and worn out, my clothes were mere rags dropping off me and when I was nearly naked and could scarcely crawl along I was turned away.
At last I got to Edinburgh and luckily got work and was trying to keep myself on three shillings per week when I got into the Brigade and this was the happiest thing in all my life."

The Edinburgh Industrial School and Home for the Rescue of Destitute & Homeless Boys was on Grove Street in Fountainbridge. The school took in homeless boys, provided them with education, and found them positions training as apprentices in various trades.
