A man and woman operating machinery at Accles and Pollock factory
Description
John James and Elizabeth Lyle operate machinery within Accles and Pollock tubular steel factory, Oldbury, West Midlands. They are both staring down at machinery out of which metal tubes are protruding. Elizabeth is wearing gloves and operating levers whilst John is holding on to a length of rope.

The firm of Accles and Pollock can be traced back to Accles Ltd. at Holford Mill, a company set up in 1896, by James George Accles (an engineer who perfected the Gatling gun), to
exploit the relatively new process of cold drawing with its considerable potential in
the booming bicycle industry. During the First World War Accles and Pollock made aircraft
components. During the Second World War they produced and developed sten gun barrels,
acclaimed as a major contribution to the war effort. In 1963, Accles and Pollock made the worlds smallest recorded tube.
This item was digitised as part of the Whose Town? project, an educational resource for schools. Unique archival material was gathered together to create a snapshot of a person's life at a particular point in Edinburgh's history.
