Conceived by George Lucas and first released in cinemas in 1977. The story is a familiar tale of good versus evil, with memorable characters including Darth Vader, Princess Leia and Luke Skywalker. Winning seven Academy awards, Star Wars was a huge success, and two movie sequels followed. The Empire Strikes Back (1980) and Return of the Jedi (1983).
The incredible popularity of Star Wars led to an unprecedented demand for merchandise. Kenner Toys obtained the original licence to make toys, puzzles, games and books, but many other manufacturers also produced Star Wars toys.
