The stories of Winnie the Pooh were created by author AA Milne in 1926. A short collection of stories and poems in four volumes that were illustrated by E.H.Shepard. The name 'Winnie the Pooh' came from AA Milne's son's teddy. The child's teddy bear 'Winnie' was the chosen name for the character. The teddy had been named after a bear in London Zoo, which AA Milne had visited with his son. The name 'Pooh' came from a swan the father and son visited in their local area of Ashdown Forest, Sussex. The swan known as 'Pooh' also featured in one of Milne's books, 'When we were very young.' Many of the characters in the stories were based on toys owned by AA Milne's son, Christopher Robin Milne.
