Thomas The Tank Engine and friends is based on the books by Reverend W.V.Awdry who originally wrote the stories for his son Christopher. The ITV network made the books in to an animated television series which was first broadcast in 1984. The stories are based on a group of locomotives, trucks and other railway vehicles which are given human characteristics.
