This item was digitised as part of the Whose Town? project, an educational resource for schools. Unique archival material was gathered together to create a snapshot of a person's life at a particular point in Edinburgh's history.
Professor Rene Leriche was a French surgeon who was born in 1879 in Roanne, Loire, the son of a lawyer. He studied in Lyon and in 1920 assumed the chair of experimental surgery there. In 1924, he was professor of clinical Surgery in Strasbourg, before returning to Lyon in 1931 to become professor of external pathology, by which time he had won international recognition.
He was the first surgeon to occupy the chair of experimental medicine in Paris in 1938, but without clinical facilities there, he operated at the American Hospital in Neuilly for the remainder of his career, producing from his lectures, a publication entitled 'The Surgery of Pain' in 1939, which was a comprehensive study of the treatment of pain.
Rene Leriche died in Cassis in 1955.
