Title
The central panel representing The Angel of Death and Purification
Description
A large winged figure of the Angel of Death stands central to this panel. Red flames burst forth from the robes in which a bird sits and another hovers above. Long red wings highlight the flame coloured hair of the angel. The artist has shown her interest in Pre Raphaelite design and the Celtic revival with her use of brushwork and the Celtic knot in the sleeve.
Artist / maker
Traquair, Phoebe Anna
Date
1892
Type
Silk embroidered linen
Location
City Art Centre
Accession number
CAC373/1964
These embroideries marked the emergence of Traquair as a designer craft worker with independent iconographic programme.
The central panel representing The Angel of Death and Purification was designed and worked independently. The other two: The Souls of the Blest (completed 1891) and Souls Waiting on Earth (1893) was subsequently added to form a tripartite screen for the artist's home. In them, we can detect resonances of the Pre-Raphaelite styles of Burne-Jones and Rossetti.
