Title
Dr. Helen Wright
Description
A figurative work of a semi nude woman. Bold colours and angular shapes give the nude a sense of joviality. The woman is painted with simple lines and shapes. Her body is covered with pale white skin that is highlighted by the intense red circles of her hair. A triangle shaped necklace hangs above the similarly shaped breasts. The left shoulder is covered with a block of pink and black colour. The right shoulder is covered with a flower pattern of yellow and pink. A large black arrow points from the right of the work towards the figure's face.

Born in Glasgow, Patricia Douthwaite's work is challenging, colourful and insightful. Douthwaite began to study mime and modern dance with Margaret Morris, whose husband,
J.D Fergusson, encouraged her to paint. This important influence apart, she was self taught.
In 1958 Pat lived in Suffolk with a group of painters, including the Scots, Robert Colquhoun, Robert MacBryde, and William Crozier.
From 1959 - 1988 she travelled widely, to N.Africa, India, Peru, Venezuela, Europe, U.S.A, Kashmir, Nepal, Pakistan and Ecador. From 1969 Douthwaite lived part of the time in Majorca, and more recently in various properties across the Scottish Borders.
The female figure was a constant theme in Douthwaite's art and the work shown here was painted from memory, like many of her works.
Dr Helen Wright was the wife of Patricia Douthwaite's doctor when she lived for a time in York.
