The Village of the Water of Leith from a window in Rothesay Terrace
Description
The work is in the medium oil on canvas. The artist has depicted the village of the water of Leith in the late 19th century. The painting depicts a view of old cottages in Dean Village which John R. Findlay demolished to redevelop with communal tenement buildings such as Well Court and Hawthorn Buildings. In this picture the demolition has just started.

This painting was commissioned by John R. Findlay, proprietor of The Scotsman newspaper and an art collector, whose Edinburgh address, 3 Rothesay Terrace, was used by Fettes Douglas to complete the picture. Fettes Douglas was a popular artist in Edinburgh and London where he exhibited work regularly from the 1850's. Douglas was curator of the National Gallery of Scotland from 1877-1882.
