William Aitchison acquired his first brewery - The Kirkfield at Peebles - in 1810 and in 1830 built a brewery on the South Back of Canongate (now Holyrood Road). His son John succeeded him in 1837 and founded the Edinburgh Brewers Association. In 1925, the company purchased a large part of the Edinburgh and Leith Brewery on St John's Street. The company was acquired in 1959 by Hammonds United Brewers of Bradford and in 1960 merged with John Jeffrey & Co Ltd to become Aitchison Jeffrey Ltd. Brewing at the Canongate Brewery ceased in 1961 after John Aitchison & Co Ltd went into liquidation.
