Leith Fort was built in 1779-80 to defend the port. It was designed by James Craig, who also designed Edinburgh's New Town. The fort served to contain French prisoners during the Napoleonic Wars, and continued to be used for military purposes until after the Second World War. The fort was largely demolished in the 1950's.
