The Queens Rifle Volunteer Brigade or 1st City of Edinburgh Rifle Volunteer Corps was formed in 1859 in reaction to British anxiety over the threat of invasion from France. From 1888 they became known as the Queens Rifle Volunteer Brigade The Royal Scots and in 1908 became the 4th and 5th Battalions of the Royal Scots (Queens Edinburgh Rifles).
