The Royal Botanic Garden, Edinburgh, is situated ¾ of a mile north of Princes Street, almost immediately to the north of the Stockbridge Colonies. Originating as a 17th century 'physic garden' located near Holyrood Abbey the gardens moved to their current site in Inverleith in 1820. The gardens expanded over the subsequent decades, incorporating Inverleith House and its grounds in the late 1870's. Notable features of the garden include the Victorian Temperate Palm House, the tallest of its kind in Britain, the Rock Garden with its range of Alpine plants, and the Chinese Hillside section with its outstanding collection of Chinese plants.
