Excerpt from page "Union Canal 1818 - On Tuesday after the adjournment of the general meeting of the Union Canal Comp, the Committee of management with many of the proprietors proceeded to the west end of Fountainbridge, the spot fixed on for the basin......Mr Downie of Appin president of the company dug the first spadeful in [?] we work. From a drawing which exhibited at the meeting of the aqueduct over Slateford Valley we think it promises to be one of the most striking and elegant structures of it's kind in the kingdom" Edinburgh Evening Courant 1818.
