A view looking down a narrow and heavily shaded alleyway towards the rocky hillside of Salisbury Crags. On either side is a row of stone houses with street lamps attached to their walls. The nearest house on the left has dormer windows protruding from its tiled roof.

This is a photograph from the book 'Origin, nomenclature and location of various houses and streets in Edinburgh'. The Canongate is the section of Edinburgh's Royal Mile running from the junction with Jeffrey Street to a roundabout almost immediately outside Holyrood Palace.
