Description

The Old Schoolhouse sits behind a low wall at 140 Morningside Road. It has two entrance doors and a central window above which a clock is mounted. The building has a sign on it advertising evangelistic services. Beside the front wall a tall post stands which supports cables for electric trams.

This is a photograph from the book 'Origin, nomenclature and location of various houses and streets in Edinburgh'.

The school built in 1823 for the children of Morningside, Swanston, Fairmilehead and Lothianburn. It was also used until 1837 as the village church until the Morningside Parish Church was built. The school was soon not big enough to support the growing population and closed in 1892. It has been used once again as a place of worship since 1900.

Morningside is a residential district in the south of Edinburgh. It lies to the south of Bruntsfield and the west of the Grange and Blackford Hill.
