This is a photograph from the book 'Origin, nomenclature and location of various houses and streets in Edinburgh'.
Dalrymple House was built as a town house just outside the city boundary by Captain Hugh Dalrymple, son of Sir John Dalrymple of Cousland, Bart., one of the Principal Clerks of Session. Captain Dalrymple, died in 1784, and the house was tenanted for some years by William Charles Little of Liberton who received the Freedom of the City on 17th April, 1786, for the gift of a "spring" on his property to supplement the town water supply. In 1792 William Little assumed the name of Gilmour and became William Charles Little Gilmour of Liberton and Craigmillar. Dalrymple House ceased to be a private residence in 1813. Up to that time the main entrance was on the street level and faced due south. In 1813 the lower level was converted into shops and a new entrance constructed in Potter Row to the upper floor which was divided into small houses.
