This is a photograph from the book 'Origin, nomenclature and location of various houses and streets in Edinburgh'.
The name Highriggs is first recorded in 1387 and derives from long strips of arable land which would have been on the medieval estate on this ridge of land outside the city. It was formally named High Riggs for the purpose of postal address from about 1830 and was one of the leading roads over the centuries leading to the West Port.
